About the album Superunknown
Somewhere towards the end of 1992, the members of the band Soundgarden began writing and recording demos with new ideas that each of them had on their own. Then the others would listen to each other's ideas, and together they would make joint decisions about the final result. These ideas led to the compositions that would make up Soundgarden's fourth studio album, titled Superunknown, released in 1994.
The success of Superunknown was immediate and significant. The sound of the album was in harmony with the grunge and alternative rock era that both the entire United States and their own city, Seattle, were experiencing at the time. The songs Spoonman and Black Hole Sun, which were also two of the singles from the album, managed to attract the mass attention of the rock audience in the U.S. and the rest of the world. The massive exposure of their video clips by MTV also helped.
Superunknown, selling 310,000 copies in the first week in the United States, went straight to the top of the Billboard. In Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, it had the same success, reaching No.1 in those countries as well. The total estimate of sales worldwide is close to 9,000,000, with two-thirds of those sold in America. After Superunknown, nothing would be the same for Chris Cornell and his bandmates.
