The prevailing version of the album's title is that it was the idea of Sammy Hagar, who, while driving his car, saw the OU812 written on a delivery van.

In OU812, the synthesizers would be limited, and the album would be closer to the hard rock sound. Sammy Hagar is on vocals for the second album, while production belongs to Donn Landee and the band members. The major hit of the album was the power ballad When It's Love, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard chart.
