About the album In Rock

In Rock was released in June 1970. A year before, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover had joined Deep Purple and the recordings started almost immediately. The aim of the fourth album was to be as heavy as possible. They wanted to capture in a studio album all the energy they exuded while playing in various clubs at the time.

The compositions on the album are credited to all Deep Purple members, and they also took on its production. They had Martin Birch with them as the sound engineer. The album reached No. 4 in the UK and remained on the charts for a year.

In Rock is one of the cornerstones of the hard rock/heavy metal scene. The cover idea was suggested by their then-manager Tony Edwards to imitate the Mount Rushmore Presidential Monument in the USA.
