For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was the ninth album of Van Halen. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard and stayed there for three consecutive weeks. Its sales reached 3,000,000 copies in the U.S.

For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was "advertised" before its release as "the return" of Van Halen to the hard sound of their early albums. This may have been an exaggeration (!) In the production of the album, apart from the band members, Andy Johns and Ted Templeman were involved.

The album's title - which might not make much sense - takes on a new dimension if you isolate the initial letter of each word.
