About the album Live At Leeds

Six live-recorded songs in one evening without much fuss were enough for The Who to remain in music history as the band with the best live album of all time, or at least one of the best. This was Live At Leeds, which was recorded on February 14, 1970, in a large hall at the University of Leeds Refectory and released on May 11 of the same year. The album cover seemed hastily designed. This was done intentionally as The Who wanted to give the impression of a bootleg (!) The original intention was to release it as a double album, but at the last moment, Townshend decided it should be a single with only six songs.

Despite the fact that The Who had enough material from their recent tour - from the Tommy tour - to release a live-recorded album, the sound didn't satisfy them, so they booked a performance in that specific venue for this purpose. The result is at least explosive, as each member of the band is heard performing as if there's no tomorrow. Three songs were compositions by The Who, and three were covers. With this album, The Who managed to push hard rock - without claiming the title of a hard rock band - to extreme limits for the time.

Live At Leeds reached No.3 in Great Britain and No.4 in the United States, where it sold 2,000,000 copies.
