This Is The Modern World by The Jam
About the album This Is The Modern World
In 1977, and six months after the release of the debut album by The Jam, their second album titled This Is The Modern World hits the record stores. This happens in November 1977. In their second album, The Jam present twelve new songs that rely on punk rock, but a shift towards the sound of new wave, which was rapidly emerging at that time, is also evident. On the other hand, in songs like Life From A Window, you get a taste of the mod revival movement that had appeared at that period in the musical scene of Great Britain.
The Modern World didn't seem to have the success that The Jam's first album did. The only single from the album was a censored version of The Modern World, which reached No.36 on the UK charts. The album closes with a cover of the classic soul hit In The Midnight Hour, and this might have been an early indication of what plans Paul Weller had for the following years. The cover photo is taken underneath the London road known as "Westway".
The album sold over 60,000 copies in the United Kingdom and reached No.22 on the charts in The Jam's home country.
