Alive! by KISS
About the album Alive!
Alive!, released in September 1975, was not just a record for KISS; it was the "kiss of life" that saved them from obscurity and their record label, Casablanca Records, from bankruptcy. By 1975, KISS had released three studio albums that, despite their energy, sounded "dry" and failed to capture the explosive atmosphere of their concerts. Sales were disappointing, and the band was in danger of being left stranded. In a desperate move, they decided to release a double live album, hoping to capture on vinyl the fire, blood, and noise that made them famous on stage.
Although the album was presented as a live recording from cities like Detroit and Cleveland, the reality had several "corrections." Producer Eddie Kramer later admitted that, due to the band's intense stage movement, many vocal and guitar parts were re-recorded in the studio to sound perfect. Only Peter Criss's drums remained almost untouched. Even the crowd noise was enhanced to make the listener feel like they were inside the arena.
The result was a triumph. Alive! became their first gold record and eventually sold over 9,000,000 copies worldwide. It reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the charts for 110 weeks, and the live performance of Rock And Roll All Nite became the ultimate rock anthem and their first major hit on the charts (No12). Alive! established the model of the "live album" as the ultimate tool for success for rock bands of the '70s, proving that sometimes the "truth" of the stage needs a little help from the studio to make history.
