About the album Sound Affects
Sound Affects was released on November 28, 1980, and is the fifth album by the Jam. It is considered by critics and Paul Weller himself as the band's most "adventurous" and complete work. The album marks a departure from the band's traditional "mod" sound, incorporating elements of post-punk and psychedelia. Paul Weller has stated that the sound of Sound Affects is a cross between Revolver by the Beatles and Off The Wall by Michael Jackson (!)
The recording of the album took place at Townhouse Studios in London, from June 15 to October 22, 1980. The song Start! borrows the bass line from Taxman by the Beatles, while That's Entertainment includes reverse guitars reminiscent of 60s psychedelia. The cover is a parody of the BBC's sound effects record series from the 1970s. It includes a collage of images such as a taxi, a telephone booth, and a hearse, which are connected to the lyrics of the songs. The title "Sound Affects No. 80" refers to the year of release (1980). Paul Weller wrote most of the material. Music for the Last Couple is the only song in the history of the Jam to be co-written by all three members (Weller, Foxton, Buckler).
The single Start! became the band's second No. 1 hit in their homeland. To Sound Affects reached No. 2 on the UK charts and sold over 100,000 copies.
