About the album An American Prayer

In 1978, five years after the official disbanding of the Doors, An American Prayer, the ninth and final studio album of the Doors, is released. The album includes music written by the Doors combined with recorded words of Jim Morrison, whom we mainly hear reciting lyrics from various poems of his.

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist of the Doors, conceived An American Prayer as a work divided into five parts, with the first covering Morrison's childhood, the second his high school years, the third concerning "the young poet, standing on a rooftop with lysergic acid dreams," the fourth part includes his musical career, and finally the fifth being "a final summary in some way, of the whole man's life and his philosophy.

For the promotion of the album, The Ghost Song was released as a single. An American Prayer reached No.1 on the Billboard and has sold 1,000,000 copies.
