About the album Can't Buy A Thrill

What can go wrong in your career when you release your debut which starts with the first song being Do It Again? Answer: absolutely nothing (!) Can't Buy A Thrill from 1972 is the first studio work of Steely Dan, whose story begins when Donald Fagen and Walter Becker met at Bard College in New York in 1967.

The experience of these approximately four years and their familiarity with music even before recording their first album would put them in the studio for only a month to prepare the first of many gems in their career in the '70s. Can't Buy A Thrill is the epitome of jazz rock, pop, and soft rock. Even the cover had something to say as it depicts a row of prostitutes standing on Rue du Gros-Horloge in the city of Rouen, France, which was the first street pedestrianized in France in 1971.

The album sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. in less than a year, and its commercial success continued for many more years. By 1993, it had managed to become platinum in the U.S.
