Schizophrenia by Sepultura
About the album Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia from 1987 is the second full-length album by the Brazilians Sepultura and is considered the landmark album that brought them out of the underground and prepared them for global recognition. Here Sepultura presents a clean thrash/death metal record. Unlike their debut (Morbid Visions), which had more primitive black metal influences, Schizophrenia introduced more technical riffs, melodic elements, and better structures. The production was done by the band itself and Tarso Senra at J.G. Estudios in Brazil.
All songs were written by Sepultura (Max Cavalera, Igor Cavalera, Andreas Kisser, and Paulo Jr.). The album functions almost as a concept with a focus on mental health and paranoia (as the title suggests). Notable tracks include: From The Past Comes The Storms, which serves as a dynamic opener of the album showcasing their new technical direction, Inquisition Symphony, an epic 7-minute instrumental that highlights Andreas Kisser's compositional skills, and Escape To The Void, one of their most iconic thrash tracks.
Schizophrenia is considered a classic masterpiece of 80s thrash metal. It was the album that led to the contract with Roadrunner Records, which re-released it worldwide in 1990. In Brazil, the album sold tens of thousands of copies immediately after its release.
