Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik by Outkast
About the album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was released in 1994 and serves as the cornerstone of Southern Hip Hop, introducing OutKast as the South's answer to the dominance of the East and West Coasts in the hip-hop world.
The album was recorded by then-teenagers André 3000 and Big Boi in Atlanta. The recording mainly took place at "The Dungeon" (Rico Wade's basement), as well as other studios in Atlanta such as D.A.R.P. and Bosstown. The production was entirely by the Organized Noize team (Rico Wade, Ray Murray, Sleepy Brown), who shaped the group's distinctive sound. The major innovation of the album was the use of live instruments (guitar, bass, keyboards) instead of the exclusive use of samples. The sound combined G-Funk elements with a southern "flavor," influences from the 70s Soul and Funk, while the lyrical themes emerged from street life, projecting social concerns for African Americans in the South.
The album reached No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum in the U.S.
