The New York-based Boogie Down Productions release their debut, Criminal Minded, and write their own page in hip hop music as the album is among the first that belongs to the subgenre of hip hop, gangsta rap.
Boogie Down Productions used samples from reggae to AC/DC, Beatles, and Billy Joel, something that was rather unusual at that time. The producers of the album were the members of Boogie Down Productions Scott La Rock and KRS-One, and Ced Gee.
The album sales initially moved slowly, something that was expected due to the cover and content of the song lyrics, but over the years it reached 500,000 sales in the USA.
