Autoamerican by Blondie
About the album Autoamerican
Autoamerican was released in November 1980 and is the fifth studio album by Blondie, marking a bold shift in their sound. The album was a radical departure from their punk and new wave roots. They experimented with a wide range of genres, such as reggae & ska on The Tide Is High, rap & funk on Rapture, or jazz & blues on tracks like Faces and Here's Looking At You.
The album was recorded in the fall of 1980 at United Western Studios in Los Angeles. The production of Autoamerican was handled by Mike Chapman, a regular collaborator with the band. Most of the songs were written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, with contributions from other members such as Jimmy Destri and Nigel Harrison. The cover features the band on a rooftop with the New York City skyline as a backdrop, exuding an "urban" aesthetic.
Despite initially mixed reviews due to its eclectic nature, the album was a commercial success, reaching No. 3 in the United Kingdom and No. 7 in the United States.
