About the album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

And sometime in early 2006, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys was released, a group of twenty-somethings from Sheffield, England, who, influenced by the goings-on in the indie/alternative rock and post-punk scene of their homeland over the previous twenty-five years, recorded one of the best debuts of the first decade of the 21st century. The album's title comes from a phrase in the 1958 novel "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" by English author Alan Sillitoe.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not consists of thirteen compositions, two of which, the songs Fake Tales Of San Francisco and From The Ritz To The Rubble, pre-existed on the EP Five Minutes With Arctic Monkeys from 2005. The music of the songs is the result of collaboration among all group members, while the lyrics are by the singer Alex Turner. The album would become the sole recording work for bassist Andy Nicholson, who left the group shortly after its recording.

The debut of Arctic Monkeys in the United Kingdom has gone eight times platinum. This translates to 2,400,000 copies sold. Its total sales are now estimated to be close to 3,000,000 worldwide.
