About the album Deserter’s Songs
The New Yorkers Mercury Rev had experienced commercial failure with their three previous albums and so, ignoring “what the audience wants,” they created Deserter's Songs in 1998.
The album became—unexpectedly—their biggest success. Deserter's Songs feels like it is from another era. Avant-pop and neo-psychedelia at its finest. It was regarded as one of the best albums of its year.
The success was particularly significant in England and the rest of Europe. The single Goddess On A Hiway contributed greatly. In their homeland, they did not manage to achieve a similar trajectory.
