About the album The Heart Of Saturday Night

The Heart Of Saturday Night is the second studio album by American artist Tom Waits, released in October 1974 by Asylum Records. Unlike his debut (Closing Time), here Waits moves away from the L.A. songwriter style and turns towards jazz and blues.

The album is heavily influenced by the Beat generation poets, particularly by Jack Kerouac, to whom the title track is dedicated. The lyrics describe the melancholy and romance of the city's nightlife, with images of bars, lonely individuals, and the journey towards finding the "heart" of Saturday night. The album cover is inspired by the cover of Frank Sinatra's 1955 album In the Wee Small Hours.

The Heart Of Saturday Night marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration with producer Bones Howe, who oversaw all his recordings until 1980. The album was included in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time at position 339 in 2003.
