About the album Meat Is Murder
In 1985, the band from Manchester released its second official album in February. The Smiths recorded the songs that would make up Meat Is Murder in mid and late 1984. On the album cover, we see a photograph of an American corporal, Michael Wynn, who was on a war front in Vietnam in 1967. The inscription on the helmet has been altered and replaced with the album title. Initially, it read "Make War Not Love." Meat Is Murder marked Morrissey's shift towards vegetarianism, which he began to promote at every opportunity.
The Smiths, on Meat Is Murder, continue to evolve as composers and musicians and to impress. The compositions started in Johnny Marr's apartment in London. He then presented them to Morrissey, who wrote the lyrics, and by December 1984, the album had been recorded.
Meat Is Murder is the only Smiths album to reach No.1 in the United Kingdom. The 100,000 copies sold on the first day of its release were enough to topple Springsteen's Born In The USA from the top of the chart. Meat Is Murder remained on the charts for thirteen weeks. Its position on the Billboard was 110th.
