About the album Red Roses For Me
The Pogues' group appears in the discography with their debut titled Red Roses For Me in 1984. There are two main protagonists of the album: the 27-year-old Shane MacGowan, who signs about half of the album's compositions, and the traditional Irish songs that the Pogues present with an intense punk-rock attitude.
Red Roses For Me is filled with songs whose lyrics deal with fights, sex, and drinking. The latter is very clear as you do not hear Shane MacGowan sober as he performs the songs. The album was a great surprise for the British pop/rock scene at the time of its release, as the integration and adaptation of traditional tunes into a modern album was not something commonly done. Legendary remains the Dark Streets of London, the first single of the album. The album cover is also memorable as the band is photographed in front of a portrait of John F. Kennedy. The former U.S. president seems to be a member of the Pogues' company (!)
The album reached No. 89 in the United Kingdom. Over the years, Red Roses For Me managed to go silver as it surpassed 60,000 sales.
