Confusion Is Sex by Sonic Youth
About the album Confusion Is Sex
Confusion Is Sex is the first full-length album by Sonic Youth, which was released in February 1983 by Neutral Records. Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo participated, while Jim Sclavunos and Bob Bert alternated on drums.
The album is an iconic example of no wave, noise rock, and art rock. It is characterized by a rough, asymmetrical sound with extensive use of "prepared" guitars (with screwdrivers between the strings), unusual tunings, and atonal structures reminiscent of industrial noises. The recording was mainly done by Wharton Tiers at his personal studio in Chelsea, Manhattan, which was located in the basement of a building. The production was extremely low cost (lo-fi) and an 8-track machine was used, which Tiers had just purchased. The track Lee Is Free was recorded by Lee Ranaldo at his home using two tape recorders (!)
Although initially an underground release with limited commercial impact, Confusion Is Sex gained cult status and was later reissued by major labels such as SST Records (1987) and DGC (1995). It is now considered one of the most influential albums of alternative rock.
