Sonic Youth was an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1981. The founding members of the band included Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals), Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals), and Steve Shelley (drums, from 1985). Sonic Youth are considered pioneers of the independent music scene and had a significant impact on the development of alternative rock, as well as the noise rock movement. Their music is characterized by the innovative use of the guitar, experimentation with noise, and alternative tunings. They made their debut with the album "Confusion is Sex" in 1983 and achieved commercial success mainly in the 1990s with albums such as "Daydream Nation" and "Goo." The band ceased operations in 2011, but their influence continues to be felt in contemporary music.
