About the album Third
The 1960s, and particularly the second half, offered the opportunity for extreme musical experimentation. Record companies were willing to support double albums with four almost twenty-minute musical pieces, one for each side of the record. This is what the Third by Soft Machine offers, an album from 1968, where the group Soft Machine has the opportunity to indulge in jazz rock, electronic music, and progressive rock improvisations.
The first side is covered by the composition Facelift, which is recorded live, while the second side is covered by the composition Slightly All The Time. The second record has on one side Moon In June, and on the second and last side of the double album, we hear Out-Bloody-Rageous. The group of Robert Wyatt creates an epic, a reference album for many of their contemporary and later bands.
The Third reached No. 18 in the United Kingdom.
