About the album There’s A Riot Goin’ On
In 1971, Sly And The Family Stone released one of the best albums of their career, There's A Riot Goin' On, which is their fifth album. The album comes at a time when there is tension and turmoil in society in the United States of America.
Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart, wanting to capture this atmosphere, composed and released this album, which is clearly darker and more serious than any of his previous works. Musically, the album is somewhere between psychedelic funk and psychedelic soul. There's A Riot Goin' On as a title is a response to the title Marvin Gaye had chosen six months earlier for his own album, which was the question What's Going On (!). The initial thought for the title was Africa Talks To You. The song There's A Riot Goin' On does not actually exist despite the fact that it appears as a title on the back cover since it is a piece of 4 seconds of silence (!).
The single Family Affair stood out and became the signature of the album, to the point that the record label Epic added a sticker on the cover, which stated that the album contains this particular hit. The highest position of the album on the Billboard was No. 45.
