Welcome by Santana
About the album Welcome
Carlos Santana and the members of his band recorded a series of jazz fusion tracks for Columbia Records from April to June 1973, which would make up the band's fifth album, titled Welcome, to be released in November of the same year.
Welcome is a much more challenging album to listen to compared to Santana's previous four albums as its sound is more experimental than ever. Apart from the band members - who had changed quite significantly - John McLaughlin, Brazilian singer Flora Purim, and pianist Alice Coltrane, widow of John Coltrane, also participated in Welcome. Moreover, the instrumental track Welcome, which closes the album and also gives it its name, is a composition by Coltrane himself.
Despite the fact that no singles were released from the album, it reached 500,000 sales in the U.S. and also hit No. 8 in the United Kingdom.
