Us by Peter Gabriel
About the album Us
Us was released in September 1992 and represents the most introspective moment of Peter Gabriel. After the global acclaim of So and a six-year wait, Gabriel returned with an album of catharsis. The recordings at Real World Studios (1989-1992) served as a therapeutic process, as the artist grappled with the end of his marriage and the complexity of human relationships.
Musically, the album combines art rock, worldbeat, and pop, marrying advanced technology with traditional instruments from Africa and Asia. Gabriel, under the guidance of Daniel Lanois, "embroidered" on digital samples, blending them with live percussion from around the world. Collaborations are pivotal: the heart-wrenching performance of Sinéad O’Connor, John Paul Jones's bass, and Brian Eno's atmospheres created a dense and spiritual sound. Naturally, Tony Levin and Manu Katché are in the constant core of the band.
Commercially, Us dominated the charts (No.2 in the USA and the UK), while the single Digging In The Dirt became the anthem of inner exploration. Another standout single from the album was Steam with its prominent MTV video clip. Worldwide sales of the album have approached 3,000,000 copies. The Secret World Tour (1993-1994) is considered one of the most innovative in the history of rock, as it turned the concert into a multidimensional theatrical experience. Peter Gabriel collaborated with visionary Canadian director Robert Lepage, creating a stage that symbolized human communication.
