About the album Houdini

Houdini was released on September 21, 1993, and is the fifth studio album by Melvins, marking their debut on a major record label (Atlantic Records). It is considered a cornerstone of sludge metal, combining elements of grunge, doom metal, and alternative metal. Its sound is extremely heavy, with slow, "muddy" riffs and an experimental approach that maintains the band's punk aesthetic.

The album was recorded in 1992-1993 at Brilliant Studios and Razor's Edge in San Francisco, as well as at Laundry Room in Seattle. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) is credited as co-producer on six tracks, although Melvins later stated that they fired him during the sessions due to his condition. Cobain also played guitar on Sky Pup and percussion on the experimental Spread Eagle Beagle. The cover of Houdini was created by the well-known graphic designer Frank Kozik. It features an illustration in a '50s style, while on the back cover the band members are depicted with six fingers on each hand.

The songs Hooch, Lizzy, and Honey Bucket were released as singles with accompanying video clips. It is the most commercially successful album of Melvins, having sold over 110,000 copies. It reached number 29 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and remains their most beloved work, influencing the entire heavy sound scene.
