About the album Second Helping
A few months after the great success of their first album, Lynyrd Skynyrd entered the studio in January 1974 and within a month prepared their second record, titled Second Helping. Al Kooper was once again the producer.
The greatest success of Second Helping and one of the most characteristic songs of Lynyrd Skynyrd is the opening track of the album, Sweet Home Alabama, which was written in June 1973 and was a response to the songs of Canadian Neil Young, Southern Man and Alabama, to send him the message to not concern himself with the Southern United States as the matter does not pertain to him due to his origin. This was the first single from the album, while the second that followed was Don't Ask Me No Questions. The album closes with a cover of JJ Cale's song, Call Me The Breeze, while all the other compositions are by the group's primary songwriters.
The album reached No. 12 on Billboard and its total sales in the U.S. alone have reached 2,000,000 copies.
