About the album The Song Remains The Same

The live album The Song Remains The Same by Led Zeppelin serves as the soundtrack for the film of the same name and is one of the most iconic recordings of the band at its peak. It was released in 1976.

The album was recorded during three sold-out concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City, from July 27 to 29, 1973. It was the close of their North American tour promoting the album Houses Of The Holy. The recording was done by Eddie Kramer using the Wally Heider mobile studio, while the mixing was later completed by Jimmy Page. The album was finally released on October 22, 1976, by Swan Song Records. Its release served as a complementary material to the film of the same name, giving fans the opportunity to hear live performances of classic tracks, such as the 29-minute version of "Dazed and Confused". Simultaneously, it filled the gap in their discography as the band was on hiatus due to a serious injury to Robert Plant in 1975. The cover of The Song Remains The Same depicts a derelict movie theater. The image is not random, as this building was located at Old Street Studios in London, where Led Zeppelin rehearsed for the 1973 tour. It was designed by the famous group Hipgnosis and specifically by George Hardie. Hardie was the person who also created the iconic cover for Led Zeppelin's first album (the Hindenburg airship) as well as the Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd.

Although the album initially received mixed reviews, its commercial success was immediate. It reached No. 1 on the UK charts in November 1976 and ascended to No. 2 on the Billboard 200, managing to become platinum within its first week of release (!) The Song Remains The Same has sold over 4,000,000 copies worldwide, with the majority of those in the USA, where it is certified as 4 times platinum.
