Substance by Joy Division
About the album Substance
Substance is a collection of ten songs by Joy Division, most of which were not released on the two official albums of the band, and thus Substance comes to function as a complement to them, even eight years after the dissolution of the band. These specific songs were found on the EP titled An Ideal For Living from 1978 or in scattered singles. The recordings of these songs, as indicated by the cover of the record, were made between the years 1977 and 1980.
Particular mention should be made of Love Will Tear Us Apart, which became a very big hit again at the end of the 1980s due to its presence in this collection. It was initially released as a single in 1980, a week after the death of Ian Curtis. The CD and cassette editions of the album contained seven additional songs from the vinyl version. Atmosphere was the song chosen as the one and only promotional single for Substance by Factory Records.
Sales of Substance in the United Kingdom exceeded 100,000 and it went gold, reaching No7 on the charts. In the U.S., it reached No146 on the Billboard and became the only Joy Division album to enter the Top-200 in the United States.
