About the album Coltrane Jazz
John Coltrane left Miles Davis' band in the spring of 1960. Shortly after, and following some changes in composition, he formed his own quartet for his live recordings. In October 1960, he entered the studio with his band and recorded the material that would eventually be used for the album My Favorite Things. From these recordings emerged the piece Village Blues, which became the last piece recorded for the album Coltrane Jazz, which would be released in early 1961.
This happened because the main content of Coltrane Jazz had already been recorded in 1959. Thus, we do not hear Coltrane's new collaborators on the record, but those with whom the great saxophonist accompanied Miles Davis. These recordings were made at Atlantic Studios and were produced by Nesuhi Ertegun.
Coltrane Jazz was one of the albums re-released in 2000 with enriched material - the length of the record was extended by 25 minutes, as it was enriched with four alternative takes of pieces - to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the jazz department of Atlantic Records.
