About the album It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah
It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah is the first album by the British band Black Grape. The album was recorded in late 1994 and early 1995. The mastermind behind Black Grape and this album is Shaun Ryder, who collaborated after the dissolution of Happy Mondays with members of Ruthless Rap Assassins, a British hip hop group from Manchester.
The sound one hears on Black Grape's first album is a mix of dance music, electro-funk sounds, and a pop vibe. The producers of the album were Danny Saber, Stephen Mark Lironi, and of course Shaun Ryder, who is also the main composer and singer of the ten songs on It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah. The word "straight" in the title implies being sober, away from substances and alcohol. Reverend Black Grape was the first single of the album, while In The Name Of The Father was the second. The third single was Kelly's Heroes, which was released in March 1996 to support Black Grape's tour in the United States of America.
The album, which no one expected, quickly became a success in Great Britain. It reached No. 1 in the country and stayed there for two weeks, while its sales made it platinum once. Today, its worldwide sales have reached 600,000 copies.
