About the album The Lamp Lies Down On Broadway
After an exhausting tour of Selling England By The Pound, Genesis secluded themselves in an old warehouse, Headley Grange, in Hampshire, England, and began recording their sixth album in August 1974. The recordings would last for three months. The problem was that the five band members found it difficult to communicate with each other.
The only thing they could all agree on was that it would be a double album, so that each could unfold every aspect of their talent. Peter Gabriel informed the others that he would only handle the lyrics of the songs, and that the music would be the responsibility of the others. And so, the double album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway of 1974 became the last album in which Gabriel participated. The record, through its twenty-three compositions, tells the story of the young Rael, who, living through various situations in New York, transforms from an accidental wanderer into something more spiritual. It becomes easily understood that Genesis had created a concept double album (!)
At the time of its release, the album failed to convince the audience or critics of its value. Ultimately, over the years, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway acquired a splendid position among the circles of 1970s progressive rock. In the United Kingdom, it reached No.10, while in the United States, it achieved No.41.
