About the album Duke
In 1979, there was a gap year in discography for Genesis, and this was a choice. Phil Collins moved to Vancouver, Canada, in order to save his marriage as his wife had moved there with their children. Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks spent 1979 recording personal albums. Thus, in March 1980, Genesis returned to the discography with Duke, their first work for the 1980s which had just begun.
Duke - musically - is an attempt by Genesis to balance between progressive rock, which seemed to have passed into the past, art rock, and pop music in its broader sense, which timidly appears on Genesis's tenth album. The single Turn It On Again entered the Top-10 in Britain and became their second single to achieve such a feat (!) Duke, however, also marked an end, the end of the group's collaboration with producer David Hentschel.
Duke became the first Genesis album to reach the top of the UK charts, and its sales exceeding 300,000 secured it a platinum status in their homeland. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Duke reached No. 11 on the Billboard and also went platinum there. A new era for Genesis had just begun during which they would transform into super rock stars of the eighties.
