About the album Me And Mr. Johnson

The album Me And Mr. Johnson was released in 2004 as Eric Clapton's tribute to his idol, the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson. Me And Mr. Johnson became Eric Clapton's fifteenth studio album. Clapton chose not to simply copy the original tracks, but to adapt them to his own style, using a full band instead of Johnson's solitary acoustic style. The production was done by Eric Clapton himself and Simon Climie.

According to his autobiography, Clapton did not initially intend to release an album. He had rented the studio but had not written his own songs, so he suggested to the band to play Robert Johnson. The recordings took place in 2003, and the album was released on March 23, 2004. Billy Preston was present, playing hammond organ and piano. The album cover is distinctive as it visually connects the two musicians. Clapton's pose in the picture directly references one of the few known photos of Robert Johnson, where he holds his guitar in a similar manner. It was designed by Sir Peter Blake (known for the cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band).

The reviews were generally positive, although some "purebred" blues fans found it too "polished." The album achieved tremendous success, reaching the Top-10 in over 15 countries and selling over 2,000,000 copies worldwide.
