Relapse by Eminem
About the album Relapse
Relapse was released on May 15, 2009, by Aftermath Entertainment, Shady Records, and Interscope Records. It is Eminem's sixth studio album and marked his return after a five-year hiatus due to sleeping pill addiction. Dr. Dre produced almost every track on the album, except for Beautiful, which was produced by Eminem himself. Mark Batson, Dawaun Parker, Trevor Lawrence Jr., Doc Ish, and Boi-1da also participated.
The album focuses on detox, the fictional relapse, and the return of the alter-ego Slim Shady. It is characterized by Eminem's use of unusual accents to match the rhythms. The sound is dark and violent, with lyrics that include themes such as murder and drugs, presented through a "horror movie music" lens. The cover is a mosaic of Eminem's face made up of hundreds of pills, directly referencing his struggle with drug addiction. The recordings took place from early 2007 to mid-2009. Five singles stood out from the album.
Relapse debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and reached the top in 12 other countries. It sold 608,000 copies in its first week in the U.S. In total, it has sold over 3,300,000 copies in the U.S. and over 5,000,000 worldwide.
