Get Happy!! by Elvis Costello
About the album Get Happy!!
Get Happy!! is the fourth studio album by Elvis Costello (and the third with The Attractions), which was released on February 15, 1980. The recordings started in London but were moved to Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum, Netherlands. Costello chose the Netherlands to avoid the distractions of London and focus on his work, after a difficult tour in the USA. Most of the album was recorded in October 1979.
The album represents a shift towards the R&B, soul, and ska scene of the 60s (there are plenty of influences from Stax and Motown), including 20 tracks on a single LP, most under 3 minutes long. It was produced by Nick Lowe, except for the track New Amsterdam, which was produced by Costello himself. The Attractions participated, consisting of Steve Nieve (keyboards), Bruce Thomas (bass), and Pete Thomas (drums). It includes two significant covers: I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down (originally by Sam & Dave) and I Stand Accused (originally by The Merseybeats). The cover was designed to look like an old 60s soul record (specifically from the Stax label). In the original British edition, the cover had printed fake signs of wear (ring wear), giving the impression that the record was used. It was designed by the iconic graphic designer Barney Bubbles.
The album reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 11 on the Billboard. It went gold in the United Kingdom (100,000 copies) in March 1980. Although it is considered one of Elvis Costello's premier works, it sold less than its predecessor, Armed Forces.
