About the album Kamakiriad

Kamakiriad is the second solo album by Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, released on May 25, 1993. It is a concept album and is the middle part of the so-called "Nightfly Trilogy". It is considered that Kamakiriad connects The Nightfly (1982 - youth) with Morph the Cat (2006 - old age/death), completing a thematic overview of the stages of life.

The record features a cycle of eight songs that narrate the main character's journey into the near future with a futuristic, ecological car called Kamakiri (in Japanese, it means "mantis" (!)). While the setting is science fiction, Fagen has stated that the lyrics are actually about the experience of middle age. It is characterized by Fagen's classic, "polished" sound, combining jazz, soul, and pop elements.

It was Fagen's first major collaboration with his Steely Dan partner, Walter Becker, since the band's breakup in 1981. Becker produced and played bass and guitar, leading to the reunion of Steely Dan for tours and subsequent new albums.
