About the album Pyromania
The British band Def Leppard reached their third album with Pyromania in 1983. Here they leave behind much of the heavy sound of the first two albums and, with producer Mutt Lange, deliver material tailored for the American audience. The music videos created to support the singles and their extensive promotion by the then newly established MTV played a decisive role in their success on the other side of the Atlantic.
This is the first album for guitarist Phil Collen, who wrote some guitar parts, while a large portion was written by Pete Willis, who was dismissed due to serious alcohol problems. Another "secret" to the enormous success of Pyromania was that Def Leppard had the "wizard" of synthesizers, Thomas Dolby, and the keyboardist of YES, Tony Kaye, on keyboards, who greatly contributed to making the sound melodic and less harsh.
The goal for America was apparently achieved as it sold 10,000,000 copies in the U.S., while only 60,000 in England (!).
