David Lee Roth's first recording move after leaving Van Halen was the EP Crazy From The Heat, which contained four covers and was successful. Lee Roth was encouraged by this success and in 1986 released his first studio album titled Eat 'Em And Smile.

Eat 'Em And Smile is an album that moves between hard rock and glam metal. David Lee Roth owes much to Steve Vai's guitar, as well as his composition skills since half of the songs bear Vai's signature. The album was a major success for the former frontman of Van Halen, who managed to stay in the limelight and thus advance his career. Of all the songs on the record, the cover of Frank Sinatra's That’s Life (!), caused a particular impression. The album was also released in a Spanish version titled Sonrisa Salvaje (wild smile), as Lee Roth's bassist suggested something like this because he had read in a newspaper that 50% of Mexicans in California were aged 18 to 27, thus a potential market for their record.

Eat 'Em And Smile reached No.4 on the Billboard and sold over 1,000,000 copies in the U.S., thus becoming platinum. In Finland, it reached No.5.
