About the album Caifanes

The first album of Caifanes (often referred to as Volumen I or Mátenme Porque Me Muero after the album's opening track) is a milestone for Mexican rock, marking the transition from the underground scene to widespread acceptance. The original quartet consisted of Saúl Hernández (vocals, guitar), Sabo Romo (bass), Alfonso André (drums), and Diego Herrera (keyboards, saxophone).

It is heavily influenced by British bands such as The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain, with melancholic melodies and atmospheric guitars. Before the album, the band had recorded a four-track demo at Arco Studio (late 1986 - early 1987). It was released in August 1988 by RCA Ariola. Although the band was formed in 1987, the album came out the following year after the success of a three-track EP. Despite the dark European style, the album includes elements of traditional rhythms, with the most characteristic example being the cumbia cover in the track La Negra Tomasa.

The album is considered the cornerstone of the "Rock en tu idioma" movement. Its significance lies in the pioneering blend of British New Wave and Post-Punk with traditional Mexican and Latin elements. It was the first time a Mexican band managed to combine the introspection of gothic rock with national identity, breaking the dominance of light pop.
