Leisure by Blur
About the album Leisure
Leisure, which was released in August 1991, marks the starting point for Blur, capturing a band in search of identity between the dying waves of the Madchester scene and Shoegaze. Although Damon Albarn later described it as "awful," the album remains a charming document of the British alternative scene of the early 90s. The title of the album was literally decided at the last moment, in an elevator, on the way to the cover printing press.
Musically, Leisure marries the hypnotic rhythms of the Stone Roses with the "noisy" guitars of My Bloody Valentine. Its biggest success was the iconic There's No Other Way, which reached No8 on the British charts, establishing Blur as "the next big thing" in the music press. The album itself climbed to No7 on the UK Albums Chart, while singles like She's So High showcased the band's ability to write melodies that listeners become addicted to.
Leisure achieved remarkable commercial success for a debut, reaching No7 on the UK Albums Chart. In Great Britain, it went gold, with sales exceeding 100,000 copies.
