About the album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days In The Life Of...
Todd Thomas, or better known as Speech, and his hip hop group from Atlanta, Georgia, appeared out of nowhere in early 1992, and with their first album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days In The Life Of..., they took the hip hop circles and beyond by storm. The video clips of the album's singles were played daily on MTV. The album sales exceeded 4,000,000 copies in the United States alone.
It was the epitome of alternative and progressive hip hop, which indeed had been making its efforts in New York over the previous three or four years, but ultimately it was the South that elevated it to a commercial musical phenomenon (!) The success was such that director Spike Lee came into contact with them and asked them to write a song for the movie he was preparing, titled "Malcom X". They prepared 'Revolution', which was included in the soundtrack.
The 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days In The Life Of... coincidentally coincided with the release of Dr. Dre's The Chronic, creating a dichotomy between the two top hip hop albums of the time. On one side were Arrested Development with an album that praised spirituality, peace, and love, and on the other side was Dr. Dre, describing materialism, rawness, and violence in everyday life in the ghettos.
