About the album The Low End Theory

The Low End Theory from 1991, the second album by A Tribe Called Quest, came one year after their debut. The second album and its creation brought the hip hop group into conflict with Jive Records and its people, which they had to pressure to grant them more "privileges."

Musically, the album continues from where its predecessor stopped. It relies on a minimalist production that incorporates some beats and jazz samples without making the whole thing tiresome for the listener. This leaves room for the caustic lyrics to highlight their content, which deal with social issues such as couple relationships, the music industry, and consumerism.

Initially, The Low End Theory didn't seem capable of achieving commercial success. Eventually, after about four years of release, it managed to become platinum in the U.S., having sold 1,000,000 copies.
