About the album As Nasty As They Wanna Be
Two weeks after the bombshell Straight Outta Compton dropped by N.W.A. in the West, 2 Live Crew comes to the East Coast of the U.S., specifically in Florida, with their own bombshell titled As Nasty As They Wanna Be. The album was the third in the sequence for the group, but the first that, due to its cover, title, and content, attracted all the spotlight.
Each song on the album deals with every form of sex. This led the group 2 Live Crew to face the legal authorities of Florida, who banned the sale of the album in every record store in the state. The band was arrested during a concert they were giving at a strip club in Florida and was playing songs from the album. With all this, the album went platinum in the rest of the American states while being remembered in history as the only album officially labeled "obscene."
In 1990, during his concert in Philadelphia, David Bowie stopped in the middle of his song Young Americans and, wanting to show his support for 2 Live Crew, told his audience: "It may not be the best album ever written, but when I heard that it was banned, I went and bought it."
