About the album Murray Street

Murray Street by Sonic Youth is one of the most iconic albums of the band's later period, marking a return to more melodic and structured compositions. It was released in June 2002 and was the band's twelfth album.

It was recorded at the band's own studio, Echo Canyon, which was located on Murray Street in Lower Manhattan, New York. The recordings began in August 2001 and were completed in March 2002. The process was interrupted by the September 11 attacks, as the studio was very close to Ground Zero. The album combines noise rock with avant-garde and indie rock, focusing more on multi-layered guitar melodies and a "jamming" aesthetic, reminiscent of the Washing Machine era. The production was signed by Sonic Youth themselves. However, Jim O'Rourke played a crucial role as a producer, sound engineer, and, for the first time, as the official fifth member of the band.

No singles were released in the traditional commercial sense, but the track Plastic Sun was used on a promotional CD, while The Empty Page and Disconnection Notice received significant exposure. In the U.S., it reached No. 126 on the Billboard chart.
