Book Of Shadows by Zakk Wylde
About the album Book Of Shadows
Book Of Shadows from 1996 is Zakk Wylde's first solo album, which was released on June 18, 1996, by Geffen Records. It represents one of the most unique moments in his career, as he sets aside the thunderous riffs of Ozzy Osbourne and the heavy sound of Black Label Society for a more introspective and melodic sound.
The album traverses paths of southern rock and folk rock, with strong acoustic elements reminiscent of artists like Neil Young and Gregg Allman. Instead of the usual shredding, Wylde focuses on emotion, composition, and creating an atmosphere by using harmonica and piano. It is noteworthy that Wylde did not limit himself to the guitar, but played piano, keyboards, and harmonica. His lyrics and performance are considered some of his most "bare" and sincere moments, revealing a Zakk who is not afraid to appear vulnerable. The production and recording were handled by Ron Albert and Howard Albert, while the mixing was done by the legendary Bob Clearmountain.
Although the album is now considered a "cult classic" and a fan favorite, it did not achieve massive commercial success at the time of its release. Sales in the U.S. are recorded in a few thousand copies, and the album did not manage to chart high on the main charts, remaining a "hidden gem" in his discography.
