Weezer by Weezer
About the album Weezer
The self-titled debut album of Weezer (known as The Blue Album) was released on May 10, 1994, by DGC Records. It is considered one of the most influential albums of the '90s, combining alternative rock with a "geeky" aesthetic that set it apart from the dominant grunge of the time.
The album was recorded at the historic Electric Lady Studios in New York between August and September 1993. Ric Ocasek, frontman of the band The Cars, took on the production of the album as the band chose him for the Cars' sound. During the recording sessions, the original guitarist Jason Cropper was fired and replaced by Brian Bell. The style of the album shifts between Power pop, alternative rock, indie rock, and geek rock. The single "Buddy Holly" was their biggest hit, with the famous video clip placing the band in the setting of the "Happy Days" series. The cover features the four band members standing in front of a simple blue background. For this reason, the album is also called The Blue Album. Although Brian Bell appears on the cover, the guitars on the album had already been recorded by Cuomo.
The album reached No. 16 on the Billboard chart. Weezer has sold over 5,000,000 copies in the U.S., 300,000 in Canada, and over 100,000 in the United Kingdom.
