Echo by Tom Petty
About the album Echo
Echo, released in April 1999, is the tenth studio album by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. It is considered one of Petty's most personal and "dark" albums, as it was written during his arduous divorce and while he was dealing with depression and addiction issues.
The album consists of fifteen songs, all composed by Tom Petty except for I Don't Wanna Fight, which is co-written and performed by Mike Campbell. The production of Echo was done in collaboration with Rick Rubin and Mike Campbell. It was the group's last collaboration with Rubin. It was the last album to feature bassist Howie Epstein, who passed away in 2003. It includes the singles Free Girl Now, Swingin', and Room At The Top, which achieved success on the rock charts.
Echo is distinguished by its introspective and melancholic nature, with songs like "Room At The Top" reflecting Petty's isolation during that period. Despite its dark nature, it reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and went gold in the US. Petty himself avoided playing many songs from Echo in his concerts for years, as they reminded him of a very difficult period in his life.
