About the album Southern Accents

In 1985, Tom Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, released their sixth album titled Southern Accents. The album had moderate success, but the single Don't Come Around Here No More certainly stood out, which was a joint composition by Petty and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. The music video for the song was broadcast on MTV several times as it captured the interest of the television audience due to its many references to Lewis Carroll's book, "Alice in Wonderland".

The musical style of the album is what is known as heartland rock. On the other hand, some compositions followed a synth-pop flair, which did not help the album. Those who undertook the production of this particular album were by no means random choices. Mike Campbell, guitarist of the Heartbreakers, legendary producer Jimmy Iovine, Tom Petty himself, Robbie Robertson of The Band, and Dave Stewart. The album cover was a painting by American artist Winslow Homer.

Despite the fact that it did not satisfy the music critics of that era, the album reached No. 7 on the Billboard, selling 1,000,000 copies, while in the United Kingdom it reached No. 23.
