About the album Turns Into Stone
Turns Into Stone is a collection by The Stone Roses released in 1992. Although it is not an "official" studio album with new material, it is considered an essential complement to their legendary first album, as it gathers some of their greatest moments that had only been released as singles or B-sides. The release happened in the midst of a fierce legal battle between The Stone Roses and their label, Silvertone. The band was trying to get released from their contract and a court decision prevented them from releasing new material for years. Silvertone exploited the gap by releasing this collection and re-releasing old singles without the band's consent.
The album represents the Madchester sound and the indie rock of the era, combining psychedelic pop with dance-rock rhythms and "shimmering" guitars. The songs were recorded during the period 1988–1990, during the band's "golden age" at Silvertone Records and most tracks bear the signature of John Leckie. The album's title comes from the last lyrics of the song One Love: "What goes up must come down / Turns into dust or turns into stone".
Turns Into Stone reached No.32 on the UK charts.
